In Loving Memory of Robert Lee Williams
SELMA, N.C. – The community of Selma is mourning the tragic loss of Robert Lee Williams, 55, who was killed in a devastating traffic accident on Interstate 42 earlier today. The fatal crash occurred just after 2 p.m. near exit 7 at Ranch Road, when the tractor-trailer Mr. Williams was driving overturned, leaving a trail of shock and sorrow throughout Johnston County.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the vehicle—a 2026 International Truck LT625 with a cargo tank trailer carrying animal waste (fat)—veered off the road to the left. In an attempt to correct the vehicle, the tractor-trailer overturned. The impact caused the cargo tank trailer to detach from the cab. The truck’s cab ultimately came to rest on its roof, facing south across the roadway, while the trailer was partially blocking lanes.
Mr. Williams, a lifelong resident of Selma and a valued employee of Bailey Feed Mill, was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Investigators confirmed that neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the accident.
This sudden loss has left a profound impact on the community and those who knew Robert personally. He is remembered not only as a dedicated worker and responsible driver but also as a loving family member and friend whose presence brought warmth and reliability to those around him. Colleagues and neighbors alike have expressed their grief, recalling his professionalism, kindness, and the quiet strength he carried in his everyday life.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation worked swiftly to clear the scene, with the eastbound lanes of Interstate 42 expected to reopen by 7 p.m. today. Yet, beyond the physical clearing of the road, the memory of Robert Lee Williams and the void left by his passing will remain with the Selma community far longer than any traffic delay.
As friends, family, and the community gather to honor his life, Robert Lee Williams will be remembered for his hard work, dedication, and the love he shared with all who knew him. In this moment of sorrow, the people of Selma are holding his family in their hearts, offering support, prayers, and solidarity.
Rest in peace, Robert. Your life, your work, and your memory will not be forgotten.
