Death Investigation Underway After Inmate Found Unresponsive in Jones County Jail
Authorities in the Pine Belt region of Mississippi are investigating the death of a young man who was found unresponsive in his jail cell only hours after being arrested on a murder charge early Monday morning.
According to officials, 21-year-old Nehemiah Rice of Braddock, Pennsylvania, was booked into the Jones County Adult Detention Center at approximately 1:33 a.m. by the Ellisville Police Department on a charge of murder. His arrest was reportedly connected to a fatal shooting that occurred at a hotel in Ellisville, though investigators have not yet released full details about the circumstances surrounding that incident.
The chain of events leading up to Rice’s death was outlined in a statement released by Jones County Sheriff Joe Berlin. According to the sheriff, after Rice was booked into the detention center, an investigator with the Ellisville Police Department conducted an interview with him inside a designated interview room at the jail facility. Once the questioning concluded, Rice was returned to his assigned jail cell.
Several hours later, detention staff discovered Rice unresponsive inside the cell. Corrections officers immediately began emergency response procedures, administering CPR and nasal Narcan in an attempt to revive him while waiting for emergency medical personnel to arrive. Narcan, a medication commonly used to reverse opioid overdoses, is frequently carried by first responders and correctional staff in emergency situations.
Emergency medical responders from EMServ arrived at the facility and transported Rice to South Central Regional Medical Center for further treatment. Despite those efforts, he was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Records from the online jail docket indicate that Rice was officially listed as being released from the jail at 9:28 a.m., which typically reflects the administrative time recorded when an inmate is transferred to medical care or otherwise no longer in the custody of the facility.
As is standard procedure whenever an inmate dies while in custody, the case has been turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) for an independent review. The agency will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding Rice’s death.
In addition, the local coroner’s office will perform an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death. Investigators will review evidence from the jail, including staff reports and surveillance footage, as part of the process.
Officials have not yet released further details about the original shooting in Ellisville that led to Rice’s arrest, and Ellisville Police Department has not yet provided additional information about that investigation. The fatal shooting remains an active case, and authorities say more details may be released as the investigation progresses.
The sudden death of the young man has raised questions that investigators are now working to answer. The findings from the autopsy and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation’s review will ultimately determine what occurred during the hours between Rice’s booking and the moment he was discovered unresponsive in his cell.
Authorities say updates will be shared once more information becomes available as both investigations continue.
