The chain of events leading up to Rice’s death was outlined in a statement released by Jones County Sheriff Joe Berlin. According to the sheriff, after Rice was booked into the detention center, an investigator with the Ellisville Police Department conducted an interview with him inside a designated interview room at the jail facility. Once the questioning concluded, Rice was returned to his assigned jail cell.

Several hours later, detention staff discovered Rice unresponsive inside the cell. Corrections officers immediately began emergency response procedures, administering CPR and nasal Narcan in an attempt to revive him while waiting for emergency medical personnel to arrive. Narcan, a medication commonly used to reverse opioid overdoses, is frequently carried by first responders and correctional staff in emergency situations.

Emergency medical responders from EMServ arrived at the facility and transported Rice to South Central Regional Medical Center for further treatment. Despite those efforts, he was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Records from the online jail docket indicate that Rice was officially listed as being released from the jail at 9:28 a.m., which typically reflects the administrative time recorded when an inmate is transferred to medical care or otherwise no longer in the custody of the facility.
