There are moments in life that leave an ache so deep, words struggle to carry the weight of what we feel. Today, we remember Juan — lovingly known as Wan Wan — a bright and beautiful 13-year-old whose life was taken far too soon in a heartbreaking tragedy.
What was meant to be a joyful and uplifting day at a track meet at STEAM Academy McCluer South-Berkeley High School turned into a scene of unimaginable sorrow. A place filled with laughter, competition, and school pride suddenly became filled with fear, confusion, and tears. Families who came to cheer were left holding each other in disbelief. Students who came to run and celebrate were left traumatized. And in the midst of it all, a young life — full of promise and innocence — was lost.
Juan was just a child. A son. A friend. A classmate. A soul who deserved many more years of laughter, dreams, and growth. Known as “Wan Wan,” he carried a light that touched those around him — a light that will never be forgotten, even as we mourn the darkness of his absence.
This tragedy has shaken an entire community. With over 20 schools present, the impact reaches far beyond one campus. Another student continues to fight for their life, and countless others are left trying to process what they witnessed. No child should ever have to experience something like this. No parent should ever have to bury their child.
We must face a painful truth: violence is never the answer. A weapon cannot solve anger, hurt, or conflict — it only multiplies pain and leaves permanent scars. There is always another way. Talk it out. Walk away. Reach out. Choose life. Choose peace.
Juan’s passing is not just a loss — it is a call to all of us. To listen more. To care deeper. To protect our children. To create spaces where they feel safe, heard, and valued.
As we say goodbye to Wan Wan, we hold on to the love he gave, the memories he created, and the joy he brought into this world. Though his time here was short, his impact will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
