The city of Newark mourns the tragic loss of Alberto “Al” Coutinho, a dedicated public servant, community leader, and former New Jersey lawmaker, whose life was cut short in a devastating two-vehicle crash on Sunday morning, March 29, 2026. Coutinho’s passing leaves an indelible void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many residents he tirelessly served.

The fatal incident occurred just before 7:30 a.m. along Route 21 near South Street in Newark. Emergency responders were dispatched following multiple 911 calls reporting a serious collision involving two vehicles. One of the vehicles became engulfed in flames after the impact. Despite the immediate efforts of first responders, who administered CPR at the scene and ensured rapid transport to University Hospital, Coutinho was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter. At least one other individual sustained injuries but is reported to be recovering.

Alberto Coutinho was a familiar and respected figure in Newark, particularly in the Ironbound section, where he spent years advocating for his community. He served with distinction in the New Jersey General Assembly, representing the 29th Legislative District for more than five years.
