Heartbreak in St. Louis: Centennial Christian Church Grieves Loss of Devoted Member Patricia Pendleton Killed in Devastating Tornado Strike
St. Louis, MO – A tight-knit congregation is reeling from loss after a powerful tornado ripped through parts of St. Louis on Thursday evening, claiming the life of longtime Centennial Christian Church member, Patricia Pendleton. The 67-year-old woman, described by friends and family as a pillar of her church and community, died when the tornado struck her neighborhood in the Baden area of North St. Louis.
The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-3 tornado with wind speeds exceeding 140 miles per hour tore through the region just after 6:00 p.m., leaving behind a trail of destruction and heartbreak. At least four people were reported dead across the metro area, with dozens more injured and hundreds displaced. Among them was Pendleton, who was inside her home when the storm hit.
First responders arrived at the scene shortly after neighbors called 911 to report structural collapse. Rescue workers found Pendleton beneath the rubble of what remained of her small brick home, which she had lived in for more than 30 years. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Centennial Christian Church, where Pendleton was a devoted member for more than four decades, has been left devastated by the news. Church leaders described her as a spiritual beacon — someone who gave tirelessly to others and lived a life of deep faith, compassion, and service.
“Patricia was more than just a member of our congregation,” said Rev. Dr. Lisa Eldridge, pastor of Centennial Christian Church. “She was family to us — someone who led by example and never hesitated to lift up those around her. From leading women’s Bible studies to coordinating community outreach, Patricia gave everything she had to her church and to the city she loved.”
Pendleton had retired five years ago after working for the St. Louis Public Schools system for more than 25 years as an administrative assistant. Known for her gentle smile and strong presence, she continued to volunteer at church events, food drives, and youth mentorship programs even after retirement.
“She had this way of making everyone feel seen and heard,” said fellow congregant and friend, Angela Mitchell. “She had a quiet strength, and you just always knew Patricia was praying for you. She was the kind of person who would drop everything to help if you were in need.”
Pendleton was also a mother of two and grandmother to five. Her family, still reeling from the shock, has expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support they’ve received in recent days.
“My mother loved this community,” said her daughter, Dana Pendleton-James. “Her life was grounded in faith and love. We are heartbroken, but we are also incredibly grateful that so many people are honoring her memory.”
In the wake of the tragedy, Centennial Christian Church has opened its doors as a temporary shelter and resource hub for those impacted by the storm. Volunteers are providing food, blankets, and spiritual support to dozens of displaced residents. The church is also organizing a candlelight vigil in Pendleton’s memory, scheduled for Sunday evening.
“This loss has shaken us to our core,” said Rev. Eldridge. “But in the midst of sorrow, we will stand together, just as Patricia would have wanted. Her legacy will live on in our hearts, in our work, and in our unwavering commitment to love one another.”
City officials have declared a state of emergency, and cleanup efforts are underway throughout North St. Louis and surrounding areas. Governor Mike Parson toured the affected neighborhoods on Friday, promising aid and support for families impacted by the disaster.
As search and recovery crews continue their work and families begin the painful process of rebuilding, one thing remains clear in the halls of Centennial Christian Church: Patricia Pendleton’s presence will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
A memorial service honoring her life will be held next Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Centennial Christian Church, 4950 Fountain Ave. Community members are invited to attend and share their memories of a woman who embodied strength, faith, and unconditional love.
